Tennis on Natural Grass

TENNIS ON A NATURAL GRASS COURT IS AN ABSOLUTE UNIQUE EXPERIENCE IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC!

The famous Grand Slam Wimbledon is celebrating its 147th year of existence this year. The oldest tennis tournament is played on grass. However, there are not many courts with real Wimbledon grass in Europe where you can play tennis. Due to the climate and the high maintenance required, each well-kept natural tennis court in Europe is a rarity. However, you can find one in the Czech Republic, specifically here at Chatea Berštejn. That’s why top tennis players regularly prepare for Wimbledon here, which is a great honor for us at Berštejn. This is also one of the reasons why Miro Slezák continues to take care of the court.

The luxury of occasionally playing on grass is quite pricey. The reasons are economical: caring for such a court is very demanding, requiring regular mowing, watering, rolling, and reseeding of new grass. And the climate in the Czech Republic usually does not favor such a court. The number of months and days in the year when the court is playable is very low.

How is it to play on grass?

The rallies on grass are much shorter, and the bounce of the ball is often irregular compared to clay. Grass poses problems for players who adapt poorly, which is reflected in their results. It’s tennis for very good amateur players and professionals. It’s the icing on the cake. And the preparation for Wimbledon.

What do you need to know before ordering tennis on natural grass?

  • The natural grass court is not played on daily; it is only suitable for advanced and competitive tennis players.
  • The natural grass court is specially prepared and lined for each game.
  • The natural grass court is not always playable. It depends not only on the weather on the day of the game but also on the weather conditions in the preceding days. Heavy rain or storms can saturate the court, making it unplayable for several days. For this reason, it is necessary to reserve the date by phone in advance and on the day of the game, to check the conditions by phone and mutually confirm the game.
  • The natural grass court can be seriously damaged by inappropriate footwear. Tennis shoes with a smooth sole for clay courts are suitable for grass. You can also try playing barefoot on the grass. It’s an experience!
